Industrial minerals play vital role in the growth
of economy of any country and has paramount importance in everyday lives of the
people. Industrial minerals comprise of
a highly diverse group of non-fuel and non-metallic minerals used in their
natural state or after beneficiation either as raw materials or as additive in
a wide range of application ranging from everyday products to highly
sophisticated space age materials.
India is fortunate to have been blessed with rich
and vide varieties of industrial minerals.
In some of the industrial minerals like barytes, talc/steatite, kyanite,
andalusite/sillimanite, dolomite and limestone, country ranks among the top
producing countries. However, it is
unfortunate that despite having wide range of industrial minerals, the
production of most of the industrial minerals in the country has witnessed
decline / remains stagnant during the last few years
Currently the industrial minerals sector is at crossroad
facing challenges of slowdown of economy on one hand and delay in mineral
concessions, regulatory clearances besides judicial pronouncements and
expectations of the stakeholders on the other hand. Considering the in-built potential of this sector,
it is imperative to put enhanced focus by way of faster mechanism of
exploration for harnessing of these minerals, adopt modern state-of-the-art
technologies and to achieve efficiency in productivity to face competitive
markets. Accordingly, market strategies
are required to be formulated taking into account the imperatives and
compulsions of domestic and global markets.
It is in the above backdrop that the Conference on
Indian Industrial Minerals is being organized in Udaipur which will lead to
finalization of well set roadmap for the sustained growth of the industrial
minerals sector of the country.
